What is Rematriation

Rematriation is the return of land, stewardship and responsibility to Indigenous women and matrilineal communities. It is not about going back - it's about rising up, restoring sacred balance, and reclaiming our rightful place as caretakers of the land.
Rematriation is more than a word—it is a ceremonial act, a healing process, and a sacred return to our ancestral lands.
It is the restoration of land, governance, culture, and ancestral memory to Indigenous women, Two-Spirit leaders, and matricultural communities. Rematriation is rooted in relationship, in kinship with the land, with spirit, with each other and all life. It honors the original caretakers and stewards of the land: the grandmothers, the life-givers, the water carriers, the matriarchs.
